What is Long-Term UK Student Visa?
The Student Visa is a visa specifically curated for those who wish to enter the UK for a period of study. This visa is offered to those who wish to study on a further or higher education course in the UK.
You are eligible to apply for this visa if you are aged 16 or above and can fulfil the following requirements:
- Have been offered a place on a course by a licensed student sponsor
- Have enough money to support yourself and pay for 1 academic course (up to 9 months)
The amount you need to pay will be on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). This amount will vary depending on your situation.
£1,334 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses in London
£1,023 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses outside London
In the case that you fall in one of the special categories listed below, you will not be required to pay these fees:
you have, for at least 12 months prior to the date of your Student Visa application, been in the UK with valid leave
you are applying as a Student Union Sabbatical Officer
you are applying as a postgraduate doctor or dentist on a recognised foundation programme
you are a British National (Overseas) or are from one of a list of specified countries or territories that are subject to the ‘differential evidence requirement’. In these circumstances the applicant should still acquire or hold the required level of funds as UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) reserve the right to seek evidence of funds from such applicants.
- You must be able to speak, read, write and understand English
To prove your knowledge of English you can:
pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider
possess a GCSE, A-level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English. These qualifications would have been obtained through study at a UK school that you began when you were under 18
have your Higher Education Provider (HEP) assess your level of English themselves in the case that you are studying at degree level or above. However, this must be equal to CEFR level B2.
- If you are 16 or 17 you must acquire consent from your parents or legal guardians. Evidence of this must be provided.
This must include their consent for:
your visa application
your living and care arrangements in the UK
your travel to the UK
When can you apply for a student visa?
In terms of when one can apply for the visa, this will depend on whether the candidate is applying from within the UK or outside the UK.
For those applying from beyond the UK, the earliest the application be made will be 6 months before the course begins. A decision on your application will typically be made within 3 weeks.
Conversely, if you wish to apply from within the UK, the earliest time an application can be made is 3 months prior to the beginning of your course. However, you must remember to reapply before your current visa expires. You must also ensure that the course you wish to apply for begins within 28 days of your current visa expiring. These applications made inside the country should expect a decision within 8 weeks.
How long are you permitted to stay in the UK as a student?
The duration of your stay will always depend on the length of your course of study and the studies you have already completed in the UK.
For those aged 18 or above pursing a degree-level course, you are usually able to stay in the UK for up to 5 years.
However, in the case that your course of study is below a degree level then you will only be permitted a stay in the UK of up to 2 years.
