UK family visa requirements 2026

Home / Immigration Law / UK family visa requirements 2026

As summer approaches, wedding season is upon us. For many couples planning to marry abroad and build their life together in the UK, this is also the time to start planning their family reunification visa application.

However, following the regulatory changes introduced in recent years, the UK family (Spouse/Partner Visa) process now requires more careful preparation than ever before. Incomplete or incorrectly prepared documents can lead to the refusal of even a seemingly strong application.

What is the UK Family Visa?

The UK family visa is a visa category that enables British citizens or those holding indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or settled status in the UK to bring their spouses or partners to the UK. This visa follows a five-year settlement route and, at the end of the process, paves the way for indefinite leave to remain and subsequently British citizenship. Furthermore, individuals who come to the UK via this visa are also entitled to the right to work.

2026 Requirements You Must Meet for a Family Visa

In order to bring your spouse to the UK, you must first be a British citizen, hold indefinite leave to remain, or have settled status in the UK. Furthermore, you must provide evidence that the relationship is genuine and ongoing. A civil marriage alone is not sufficient; the Home Office requires comprehensive evidence demonstrating the sincerity of the relationship. In addition, you must provide suitable accommodation where you can live in the UK.

2026 Family Visa Financial Requirement: Minimum annual income of £29,000

The most critical aspect of applications is the financial requirement. With the minimum income requirement rising from £18,600 to £29,000 in April 2024, the financial threshold for family reunion applications has increased significantly. The sponsor must meet the minimum annual income requirement of £29,000.

Salary income is not the only option for meeting this requirement. Under certain conditions, savings, self-employment income, rental income and pension income may also be taken into account. However, each income category has its own specific documentation requirements, and the absence of even a single required document may result in the application being rejected, even if the income level is sufficient.

2026 UK Family Visa Required Documents

The application file generally contains the following documents:

    • Valid passports and identity documents
    • Marriage certificate or official documents proving the relationship
    • Evidence of the ongoing nature of the relationship (joint bank accounts, photographs, correspondence, records of shared residence)
    • The sponsor’s proof of income (payslips, bank statements, employer’s letter)
    • Proof of English language proficiency at A1 (beginner) level
    • Documents relating to accommodation arrangements
    • Tuberculosis (TB) test result (applicable to certain countries)

2026 Family Visa Application Fees and Process

In 2026, the fee for a spouse visa application made from outside the UK is £2,064, whilst applications made from within the UK cost £1,407. In addition to this fee, the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) must be paid for the duration of the visa. Applications are made online and are completed with a biometric appointment.
