Important Notice for Those Applying for or Renewing a British Passport

Last month, the UK Government announced that the cost of British passports will rise. This increase applies to both new applications and renewals. According to a statement from the Home Office, passport fees will increase by around 7% as of 10 April.

As stated on Gov.uk, you can apply for a British passport if you are a British citizen, a British Overseas Territories citizen, a British Overseas citizen, a British subject, a British National (Overseas) or a protected person.

When you apply for a British passport, you will not receive a refund if you cancel your application, or if you are found not to be eligible for a British passport. Therefore, you should make sure that you meet the relevant eligibility criteria before applying. The cost of a travel document will also increase from 10 April 2025.

New Passport Fees (Effective 10 April 2025):

Applications from within the UK:

  • Online Application (Standard):

    • Adult: £88.50 → £94.50

    • Child: £57.50 → £61.50

  • Postal Application:

    • Adult: £100 → £107

    • Child: £69 → £74

  • 1-Day Premium Service:

    • Adult: £207.50 → £222

    • Child: £176.50 → £189

Applications from Outside the UK:

  • Online Application (Standard):

    • Adult: £101 → £108

    • Child: £65.50 → £70

  • Paper Application (Standard):

    • Adult: £112.50 → £120.50

    • Child: £77 → £82.50

The Home Office stated:

“The new fees will ensure that the cost of the system continues to be met by those who use it, reducing reliance on general taxation. The Government does not make a profit from passport application fees. These fees help cover the costs of processing applications, providing consular support for lost or stolen passports overseas, and administering British citizens at UK borders.”

They also added:

“Citizens are advised to allow plenty of time to apply before travelling. In 2024, 99.7% of standard applications that did not require additional information were processed within three weeks. However, if the Home Office needs to request further information or arrange an interview, processing times may be longer. Processing times can also vary if you are applying from abroad.”

For online renewal applications, you will need a digital photo, a credit or debit card, and your current passport. Paper application forms can be obtained from a Post Office that offers the “Check and Send” service or by calling the Passport Adviceline. Alternatively, you can contact our office at 0208 807 1676 to receive professional assistance with your British passport application.
